“The Mysterious Wheels
Same Shoes, New Blues
It’s been over thirty years since their last album but then lead singer Andrew Ranken has been busy drumming for The Pogues. They play the blues and deliver eleven tracks of classic blues that range from upbeat toe- tapping songs to get people dancing to slow and easy blues of loss and longing. Ranken’s vocals are honest and frank, the voice of someone who’s experienced the highs and lows of life, and bring emotional depth to the songs. The playing is slick and easy, with guitars, piano, saxophone and drums bringing soul to the sound. Opening track Bloodhound is a stomper with a bouncing bass line that drives the song with piano and subtle guitar filling out the sound. Weed Seed is a bluesy rock and roller, up tempo and catchy with a sax solo that compliments the piano lines. I Want To Tell You is a slow blues number of longing with a classic bass line and piano and laidback guitar making it slip down as smoothly as a late night whisky. Waiting Room is stripped down to acoustic guitar and dobra which adds an Americana feel while I Wanted To Cry is a wry tale of misfortune with a subtle funkiness to the music. Shite For Brains is a slower number with a twist of country along with the blues and brings the album to a satisfying conclusion.”
